My good friend, Karen, called me in March to "book" me for doing prom makeup for her daughter (a senior this year) and 4 of her friends. Imagine my surprise that prom was coming and I hadn't heard about it (I wonder when, with a son, I will quit being surprised about the LACK of communication). So I promptly texted Travis (the only way I can reach him and get an actual reply) and asked him if was planning on going..."no - I don't want to" was the reply; prom was scheduled for April 5th.
On Wednesday, April 2nd, I was busy at work on the computer at 10:00pm and Travis casually walks by..."Oh, I decided I am going to prom afterall." Huh? On Saturday? It is Wednesday! Immediately I say, "Are you kidding? We have to get a tux."
"Oh, no, I don't need a tux." (Travis)
"What? You don't need a tux? I am pretty sure you HAVE to wear a tux..what else are you going to wear?" (Lame mom...who knows NOTHING)
"Well, let me go text 'my people' and I'll let you know." (Travis)
Five minutes later...sheepishly he says, "Yeah, I have to wear a tux."
"Oh, of course, don't believe ME because I NEVER went to prom...or four!" (that's me, just in case you couldn't tell)
So I start planning...well, "what color dress is she wearing?"
"She, who?" (Travis)
"Uh, the girl...your date..." (Dumb mom)
"Uh, I dunno, I haven't asked her yet." (Dumb boy)
"Huh?" (astounded mother)
I'm pretty sure I had deer in the headlights look at this point. He told me he couldn't "ask" her over the phone. Are you kidding me?! This coming from the child who had 6,200+ text messages the month before and is testing the limits of "unlimited texting." Why he can't text her, I don't know, but I guess that means I raised him better than that (or at least I hope that is what it means)...
Anyway, long story short...he asked the girl (a cheerleader), she said yes, and they went. HOWEVER, because she is a cheerleader, they had state cheer tournaments that day (Saturday all day) and so we didn't get to meet her, see her or anything...just hear about her, which was limited to...uh, nothing other than she was a cheerleader and what my "myspace" search turned up (which wasn't much). In the end, they made it to the dance with one song left, and then the DJ played one for the cheerleaders and their dates...and the cheerleaders took State.
So while the parents (who remembered their days of prom gone by) were disappointed not to meet the girl, Traivs had a great time...until 3:00am. Ugh! Being the parent of teenager is hard work, I don't care what anyone says - Trey spent 3 hours washing and detailing my car for him to take...it was beautimus! (you would have thought he was going on the date because he was soooo excited for Travis). And, as Trey keeps reminding me - enjoy it now, because I am going to miss this when they're gone....
and so I will, I know. What a handsome dude, don't you think?
