It was a fun-filled football season for the Matadors. Travis was a senior and on varsity and Andrew played on the freshman team.
Andrew started out on defense as a defensive back and scored a 60+ touchdown when he ran back a punt return...this was just the first of many touchdowns for him this season. After grades came out, the team lost several players, so Andrew had to play offense as well - and continued to rack up the points. His team finished 5-3 this year and he is back in the weight room getting ready for next season.
Travis also had a great season his senior year. He started out on offense and scored a couple of TDs early on (even had his name in the paper), and then was moved to defense...which was a surprise to us all since he had never played defense. He did great! By the playoffs when we travelled to Clovis, he was hitting hard and was a player to be reckoned with. Right before half at Clovis, he had a hard hit to Clovis' deep threat receiver and the Clovis player was out for the rest of the game, and the rest of the season. Travis earned "Most Improved Defensive Player of the Year" award, he was also a team scholar and made All Academic All Metro. Needless to say, we are very proud of his accomplishments. Varsity finished 9-3 this season (that was with the playoff game) and scored the most points in the city over the past 4 years...Coach called them "the Winningest Team."
I will say, it is a hard realization that I will not see Travis play under the lights again. When he walked off the field, after losing to Clovis, I lost it...I was so sad when I realized that this was it for him. I can still remember his first day in YAFL when he had to wear pads and a helmet - he could barely hold his head up because the helmet was so heavy and the pads were bigger than he was! I dropped him off for practice; it had rained the night before and when I picked him up, he was covered, and I mean COVERED, in mud. He just grinned at me and said, "Mom, I love this game!" Trey and I will not know what to do with ourselves with only one son in football because for 10 years now, we've had two boys in football.
Here are some pix from the season:
